Minetest, the Minecraft-like voxel game engine (and an easy game that is included) has a major new release out with Minetest 5.4.0 and it's worth trying again.

As we mentioned in the Release Candidate stage one of the most important features for users in this version is that it is much easier mods, both small packs and complete games. Minetest was previously a way for players to browse and download mods directly from the game. However, it now also downloads all dependencies mods need making it simpler to find what you require and load it into the game. It's no longer a matter of downloading one mod and then having to find every single piece of information it needs.

The built-in game "Minetest Game" also received a few enhancements. Although it's a basic game, it is a great tool to showcase the engine as well as to add mods. Minetest 5.4.0 now comes with crafting instructions, five more wood variations, as well as environmental sounds for active furnaces and lava, along with numerous bug fixes and translations. The watr It is continuing to grow slowly and gradually into something that is a bit bigger out of the box.

Other new features include the cross-hair changing when pointing at objects, the ability to bind mouse buttons, name tags for players now feature a semi-transparent backdrop, there's a caverns option for the flat map generation, the "place" and "fig" keys are now configurable as well as a variety of modding enhancements and plenty of bugs fixes, such as blocking players from access inventory of other players.
