Epic Games 'definitely Won't' Follow Minecraft NFT Ban

Epic Games founder and CEO Tim Sweeney says his firm "definitely will not" follow Minecraft developers in banning nonfungible tokens (NFTs).

As previously reported, Mojang Studios, Minecraft developers, banned NFT integrations on Wednesday as it believes NFTs are speculative and a high risk of exclusion, and scams are in violation of the game's rules.

The move was viewed as highly controversial in the NFT community, but it has been greeted with acclaim by the group of crypto-skeptic gamers.

Sweeney's company is the creators of the highly successful battle royal game Fortnite that is seen as a Metaverse platform. Although Epic Games isn’t necessarily pro-crypto and NFTs, its CEO has stated that the company does not intend to force any opinions on the subject to its users.

Developers should be free to choose how they build their games, and you should be free to decide whether to play them. I believe that operating system makers shouldn't interfere in any way by imposing their ideas on others. We shouldn't.

In response to the post, Twitter user Low5ive asked Sweeney if Epic Games' policy on prohibiting "hateful/discriminatory content" differs from this. In reply, Sweeney suggested that Epic Games does make "editorial" decisions, but NFTs don't currently fall under their umbrella.

"A store can decide to avoid making such judgments and host anything that's legal, or choose to draw the line at the accepted norms of the day like we do, or allow only games that are in line with the personal beliefs of the owner," he said.

Mojang Studios' NFT ban has been a major blow to NFT Worlds, a project that is based on Minecraft's open-source servers, with a significant issue.

Its NFTs generate 51,000 Ether (ETH), which is $80.8 million worth trading volume at the time. However, its NFT floor price has slid from 3.33 ETH to 1.01 ETH since the news dropped. Meanwhile, its native token WRLD plunged 55% in the timeframe.

The NFT Worlds team said that they are currently "brainstorming" solutions to the Mojang announcement. The team mentioned that it is trying to get in contact with Minecraft to see if a possible solution is possible. Otherwise, a pivot to the "Minecraft-like game engine" or GameFi platform has been discussed as possible alternatives.
